Seems like a remarkably stupid idea as opposed to just having an extensive encyclopedia downloaded with a very thin client you can use to read from it.

In an actual survival scenario power isn't guaranteed and errors of any kind can be life or death. So you need to minimize the resources used to get the thing working.
