Real question: Is the Linux kernel terminal the fastest of all? If yes, why not compile there?

Because I run in parallel other programs and I want to interact with their windows, which would be much too cumbersome if I needed to switch between a virtual console and the GUI desktop forth and back any time when I want to watch the compiler output.
